Steven Hawking PhD thesis that he wrote at 24 years of age has been put on to the Cambridge University website for open access, only to have the university’s site crash as the result of overwhelming public access to down load it. In a rare move, Cambridge University has made Professor Hawking’s thesis open to the general public so he can put up one of his most prominent pieces of scientific discoveries on to the university’s website for all to see. However, the overwhelming surge by the public to download the now free accessed thesis has been so vast that the page has been overwhelmed and subsequently downed for the time being. This was a move made by Cambridge University as a way to celebrate Open Access Week this year and encourage other scholars to do the same. According to Professor Hawking, “By making my PhD thesis Open Access, I hope to inspire people around the world to look up at the stars and not down at their feet; to wonder about our place in the universe and to try and make sense of the cosmos. Anyone, anywhere in the world should have free, un hindered access to not just my research, but to the research of every great and enquiring mind across the spectrum of human understanding.” Professor Hawking’s ‘Properties of Expanding Universes’ is considered one of his greatest contributions to science and explains how the universe works in such mysterious ways. Through this act, Professor Hawking hopes to inspire all academics whose works are considered to be contributions to human knowledge, to put up their findings for all to see so that knowledge becomes available to everyone around the world without prejudice. This is a task that is being welcomed and even supported by Cambridge University, but has overwhelmed the university’s online system in an unprecedented manner.
