Lying is a skill that all children learn and there are reasons for this problem. When do children lie?

Lying makes no sense to the children below three years old, they tell what they want and even what they don’t understand. 3 or 4 years old children learn that the adults don’t understand the things they’re thinking about and they can’t recognize if it’s right or wrong.  This means that they believe in imaginary things and they start explaining impossible stories.

When they are in trouble, they blame others without any intention of harming anyone. They explain long stories and exaggerate about them; actually, these stories are the things they wish to be true. Parents could listen to these stories without commenting and moderate them based on realities.

For example, if your child tells you that he/she can fly in the room, you can answer in this way:

You wanted to fly in the room, right?  What would you do if you could?

If your child is trying to hide her/his mistakes from you by lying, you should never show any reaction. You should simply tell them that “we should always tell the truth and it will never put you in trouble, it makes your parents happy”. Teach them if they continue lying, nobody will trust them no more.

In school time, children really want to make their parents happy and this makes them think that if they tell the truth their parents will be upset. They understand the difference between imagination and reality when they are 8.

There are a lot of reasons to this problem:

1) When they know they have made a mistake, they are lying not to be punished.

2) To get what they want.

3) Children who are loyal to their family and friends, they lie to defend them.

4) For influencing others, their lives and experiences get more excitement.
