BE AN EFFECTIVE WRITER
Has writing been always a problem for you? If you are a good writer don’t you like to be the best not just the usual? Writing starts with using sentences of course. But the kind of sentences that are used is very much important to how your writing is going to be effective.
As Eugene Schwartz has said:
“No sentence can be effective if it contains facts alone. It must also contain emotion, image, logic, and promise.”
So, in order for your writing to be attractive for the readers, you need more than just words and phrases.
Here’s how your writing should be done.
The fact in your writing should be the correct relation between subjects and verbs. You insert facts by thinking through the 5 Ws: Who, What, When, Where, Why.
“Mary visits her mother every Sunday”.
In the sentence the subject agrees with the verb and a fact is said. By saying who is doing what and what she is doing. But now look at this sentence.
“Mary visits her sick and old mother every Sunday to comfort her”.
The two sentences have the same fact but the first one had no feelings in it. By using just two words “old and sick” you have a more emotional sentence.
While you are writing something try to make your readers use their imaginations to fill in the blanks that you provide for them. You don’t have to have long sentences to say what you mean. You just need the write words and sentences.
“The woman fled” ( you have introduced most of the senses, sight, sound…for the sentence “ The woman fled in fear”. )
When you want to explain something use phrases like this “ imagine this” or “picture this” and continue explaining.
“Imaging fifty-first grader boys coming out of the school to go home.”
Your reader immediately starts to think of 50 naughty students coming out of the school with lots of noise and making sounds.
As a plain writer evoking your reader’s emotion is not enough. The thing your reader needs is a promise. So, they need some hopes in your sentences:
What promises are you making to the reader in this sentence?
What advantages will the reader gain?
What pain will they avoid if they obey you?
The promise is that you can learn how to write in such a way people can’t resist your words. And that’s compelling for the right people.
Practice over and over again:
To be a good writer or write effective sentences needs a lot of work and practice. But how can you practice? Here’s how.
Opening and closing paragraphs: Put energy into every sentence inside the opening and closing paragraphs.
Headlines: Your headline is not a complete sentence, but they offer you an opportunity to focus closely on what you are writing.
Subject lines: Now start writing with facts and explanations. Write complete, robust sentences
Tweets: Twitter is the perfect mechanism for perfecting your sentences. You are forced to say a lot in 140 characters. And you get feedback. People either respond — or they don’t. Check for retweets, favorites, and replies. And if you don’t get a response, try sharing it again.
You may not be perfect in your 500-word writing but keep practicing until, well… no time…the more you practice the better writer you will be.
