ACCOUNTING

 

 

 

For each job, there are some special English vocabularies that are good only for that specific position. Here we mention some words that are related to accounting.

 

Bookkeeper

A person that records the financial transactions of a business.

John has been the company’s bookkeeper for five years.

 

CA (chartered accountant)

An accountant that is totally qualified and holds a current certification.

Marry is a CA and no wonder she gets a job wherever she applies for it.

 

confidentiality

When something should be held as a secret.

Lawyers should keep their client’s confidentiality.

 

Assets

Anything that a company or a person has.

Our company’s assets are increasing each year.

 

Balance sheet

A summary of the financial balances of an individual or organization, whether it be a sole proprietorship, a business partnership, a corporation, private limited company or other organization such as Government or not-for-profit entity.

Nowadays balance sheets are done by computers.

 

Tax advisor

A specialist who gives you advice on taxation.

Our company fired our tax advisor this morning.

 

Auditor

A specialist whose job is to carefully check the accounts and accounting practices of a company.

Our company had 3 auditors this week and we had to stay after working hours to answer their questions.

 

Debit entry

An accounting entry acknowledging sums that are owing.

The transaction that is made is recorded as a debit entry.

 

Credit entry

An accounting entry acknowledging income or capital items.

The auditors had a lot of questions about our credit entry.

 

Account

A record or narrative description of past events.

Our company’s account is quite new.

 

Balance

Harmonious arrangement or relation of parts within a whole.

Keeping our company’s balance is John’s job.

 

Ledger

A record in which commercial accounts are recorded and kept.

It does this by ensuring that each individual financial transaction is recorded in at least two different nominal ledger accounts within the financial accounting system.

 

Posting

A sign posted in a public place as an advertisement.

We are looking for an attractive and meaningful posting for our business.

 

Gross

The amount before deductions. For example, gross pay is the amount before withholding deductions.

The employee was complaining about their gross payment.

 

Lease

A legal agreement to pay rent to the lessor for a stated period of time.

I have worked in a leasing company before and I didn’t like it.
