Almost every generation know about this wonderful novel written by Jean Webster. It’s mostly known as Judie Abbott as she’s the lead role in this amazing story.

“Daddy long legs” is a continuing story of letters which was published in 192 for the first time. It narrates the story of a life of its hero, which is a young girl during her years of studying at college.  She writes letters to a rich man who supports charity and she hadn’t seen him even once.

This book is the Jean Webster’s most successful book. It was first published in an American magazine ‘women house’ as a continuing story. It wasn’t just a story but it motivates people to help and supports charity more than before. A successful performance of this story was played on stage in 1914. She published the ‘Dear Enemy’ as the second part of this book.

The story is related to the effective presence of women at workplaces and their right in choosing different thing. While some other say that it’s the enemy of women rights in society and the last group believes that Judie is a Liberian.

There are a lot of movies and TV shows based on this book including Daddy long legs ( 1919) a silent film by Mary Pickford, Daddy long legs (1938) the German edition and Daddy long legs (2005) the South Korean edition.

Let’s read some first sentences of this memorable novel:

The first Wednesday of every month was a perfectly awful day- A day to be awaited with dread, endured with courage and forgotten with haste. Every floor must be spotless, every chair dustless, and every bed without a wrinkle. Ninety-seven squirming little orphans must be scrubbed and combed and buttoned into freshly starched ginghams; and all ninety-seven reminded of their manners, and told to say, ‘Yes, sir’, ‘No, sir,’ whenever a trustee spoke.

It was a stressing tome; and poor Jerusha Abbott, being the oldest orphan, had to bear the brunt of it. But this particular first Wednesday, like its predecessors, finally dragged itself to a close. Jerusha escaped from the pantry where she had been making sandwiches for asylum’s guests and turned upstairs to accomplish her regular work.
