ENGLISH DISAGREEMENT

disagreement

It happens sometimes that you do not accept an idea and you want to express your feelings, but in a way that the other person is not hurt. In other words, you want to disagree in a polite way. The person can be your friend, your family member, a colleague or even a perfect stranger. How can you say no to another person without hurting their feelings?

The strategy you use may differ from culture to culture but there are many sentences that you can use in English to show your disagreement calmly and politely. No matter what sentence you use to try to stay calm and show that your disagreement comes from just a different point of view and nothing else is behind it. Here are the sentences you can use.

I see what you’re saying but I think…

I respect your point but from my perspective (or but in my opinion)…

I take your point but that isn’t the way I see it; instead, I think that…

True, that is a fair point, but I have to say I disagree…

I understand where you are coming from but…

There is some truth to what you’re saying but don’t you think that…

I’m sorry but I have to disagree with you on…

I’m not sure I agree with you on…

I don’t think you and I have the same opinion on this issue.

I’m afraid I disagree.

I’m sorry but I don’t agree.

I don’t see it that way.

I’m sorry but I disagree with you on this.

I respectfully disagree.

I have a completely different opinion on that.

While disagreeing have another option or alternative for the idea. This shows that you really want to solve the problem not to disagree with the other person. Here are some phrases with an alternative that can be used.

Instead, I think we should/could…

My suggestion would be to…

An alternative solution might be…

I would recommend that we…

How about we…

What do you think about _______ instead?

If you ask me, I think we should…

These phrases are all proper for formal and informal disagreements but for close friends or informal situations the following phrases can be used.

No way!

You must be joking!

You can’t be serious!

I totally disagree.

I don’t think so.

Suppose you made your point and discussed over something and you never came to a conclusion what can you say then? The sentence that can be used in this situation is “Let’s just agree to disagree.” At least agreeing on something is better than nothing. So, don't be afraid of saying any to an idea. Express yourself in a polite way and you’ll see the difference.
